How do they differ?

Ingredients and Texture

Gelato Originating from Italy, gelato is made with more milk and less cream than ice cream, resulting in a lower fat content. This composition gives gelato a denser and creamier texture because it contains less air.-

Ice Cream Typically, ice cream has a higher fat content due to more cream and less milk. The churning process incorporates more air, making it lighter and fluffier compared to gelato.

Air Content

Gelato Gelato has less air whipped into it (about 20-30% air), resulting in a denser and smoother texture. This lower air content enhances the flavor intensity and increases your value for money

Ice Cream Ice cream can contain up to 50% air, making it lighter and more airy. The higher air content can sometimes dilute the flavor intensity, but it contributes to a rich and creamy experience. 

Less than savoury brands add as much air (called overrun) as possible to serve you more air than ice cream! Other may use additves to bulk up the expensive dairy. Have you ever seen ice cream that doesnt melt 🤮

Why is it called a Sundae?

The term "ice cream sundae" originated in the late 19th century America when "blue laws" prohibited the sale of soda on Sundays.

Soda fountain cafes began serving the syrups they made sodas with on ice cream with toppings instead, initially calling them "Sunday" sundaes.

The name was later changed to "sundae" to avoid religious connotations, and the dessert quickly became popular across the USA

Little Italy

Ice cream came to the UK in the 1800s as Italians moved to the country. Apparently its was to sunny there  🤣

Manchester alone has many multi generation Ice Cream businesses with the Antonellis, Cabrellis, Rea's and many more that we've not met yet!

Belive it or not Ancoats was originally called little Italy, with many families moving to Manchester for a better life.

More importantly, when they arrived, they made Mancunians's lives better with Ice Cream

Invented in China, Perfected in Florence

The oldest evidence for Ice cream-like treats date back to ancient China, where snow was mixed with rice and milk around 200 BC.

Marco Polo is often credited with bringing a similar recipe back to Europe.

The invention of gelato is often attributed to Bernardo Buontalenti, a Florentine artist and architect who served at the court of the Medici family in the late 1500s.

Buontalenti is credited with creating a frozen dessert made from milk, honey, egg yolks, and a touch of wine, which is considered one of the earliest forms of gelato.
